a song to drive to
#30daysongchallenge
I’m not a driver. I am too afraid to drive in a car on these murderous streets -especially in a country where the speed limit is so high – you can’t really talk about relaxing drives. But that is beside the point – because there is one of the few reasons that I really want to overcome my fear and my hate of street aggression: I really want to cruise into a sunset adventure with Bruce Springsteen songs on my stereo.
I love the longing passion behind the tunes and it is always a bittersweet cup of love poured into perfect songs. „Valentine’s Day“ is beautiful. It sways and Bruce sings of wanting to go go go … to be with his love. And of course the protagonist is driving. He sings of american folklore (timberwolves, route 39, highways and jukeboxes).
It is not really a happy love song, it is more a song about the fear and hurt of possibly losing someone and the importance to be reassured of the other one being close by. The german word „Sehnsucht“ (longing) comes to mind. And Sehnsucht is probably my favourite emotion – because it is unfixed and unfocused – it hurts and soothes at the same time. Similar to traveling – you are not here nor there – you miss the place you were at before but you are excited to reach the new location.
I’m driving a big lazy car rushin‘ up the highway in the dark
I got one hand steady on the wheel and one hand’s tremblin‘ over my heart
It’s pounding baby like it’s gonna bust right on through
And it ain’t gonna stop till I’m alone again with you
(valentine’s day)
