a song about drugs or alcohol
#30daysongchallenge
„I’ll tell you this, because as an artist I think you’ll understand“ this is a movie quote („Annie Hall“ with Christopher Walken) and it starts this song by Jawbreaker.
Songs about drugs/alcohol are not easy to decipher because the relationship with an addictive substance is as indiviual as we all are. Jawbreakers „Jet Black“ could also be about a (regular) relationship – even though it is not the good kind of relationship. I like the dark and powerful sound and the lyrics are ominous. It is not a bright song. So, please listen to something with a little more hope next!
I’ll be quiet to keep you quiet
Don’t concern yourself with my slow dying
Through the vents I hear you sigh
I don’t get too high these days
Your floor is my ceiling
Lights out, you can’t come in
(jet black)
Jawbreaker was a bit more than just a punk band from the late eighties – they were quite influential to what was later called Emo(core). If you like the sound and are curious why this band was so important go and watch „Don`t Break Down“ (2017) a documentary about Jawbreaker. (I’m not sure where you can stream it, I was lucky to catch it on a summer night special screening).
